Windows privacy cleanup is not one magic switch. It is a set of small choices: advertising ID, personalized suggestions, app permissions, clipboard history, background app behavior, consumer experiences, and newer AI surfaces.

- Activity history, app-launch tracking, and recommendation surfaces.

- AI or assistant features you do not use.
- Background app permissions for apps that should only run when opened.
Advertising ID and suggested content
Windows includes a per-user advertising ID and settings for personalized or suggested content. Microsoft documents these controls under Privacy & security > General. Turning them off is different from disabling core diagnostic or security services, so they belong in the lower-risk end of a privacy cleanup.
App permissions need context
Camera, microphone, location, contacts, and similar permissions can often be managed per app. Desktop programs do not always appear in the same permission lists as Store apps, so do not assume a disabled Store-app permission controls every traditional desktop program.
